When I saw this particular musical, I was lucky enough to be in Europe and I saw it in the West End! This was very exciting.
We all know the story of how Charlie Buckets finds a golden ticket in a Wonka chocolate bar and he goes on a tour of Mr Wonka's chocolate Factory. With so much pressure from the novel written by Roald Dahl and it being adapted twice into a film, the musical would have to be pretty amazing.
I enjoyed how the director took a more modern approach towards portraying the children and the good use of lighting and sound effects to create all the machines and the visual elements that are easily implemented into a film or imagined in a book. I enjoyed the music, but I spent most of my time trying to spot lyrics that were written about each of the children in the book. We all know the iconic song 'Augustus Gloop, Augustus Gloop, the great big fat nicompoop' yet it was not included into the musical.
I commend the cast and crew on the interesting costuming of the Oompa-Loompas and the dry, witty humor that kept me in fits of laughter, but most of all the parting message of 'Being Grateful for what you have, is the only happiness you need'
Directed By: Sam Mendes
Starring: Alex Jennings, Billy Boyle etc...
