I read The Martian a novel by Andy Weir before I saw the film and the novel alone was funny and kept you wanting more. The film was just the same a funny journal of Astronaut Mark Watney's time on Mars after being accidentally abandoned by his crew, Watney battles loneliness and the issue of returning back to Earth. The film splits between Watney's daily issues on Mars to NASA on earth who are desperately trying to bring the astronaut home.
Matt Damon embodies the personality of Watney with is witty comments and his determination to survive which makes it a real stand out film. The vast scenes of the red planet convey the sense of loneliness and isolation to the audience and creates a harsh environmental background to Watney's struggles which makes us appreciate our habitable planet earth.
The film definitely challenged science to the limit but with all its imagination the Martian encourages all budding astronauts to look beyond their horizons and defy reality. (Which is what the film does literally)
Dir. Ridley Scott
Starring: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Sebastian Stan etc...
